Bobby Jones' Major Wins
Bobby Jones' 13 major championships are only exceeded by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. However, unlike these modern players, Jones achieved his triumphs while traveling a career total of 150,000 miles by boat or train, not by jet, and he played golf with an eclectic set of clubs with hickory shafts. Far from the performance golf wear of today, Jones’ attire in competition was woolen plus-fours and high socks, long-sleeved dress shirt, and necktie, which, in combination with heat and stress, caused him to lose as much as 15 pounds in a single tournament.
All these factors show how incredible his record of 13 major wins in seven years remains to this day. And, to date, his achievement in winning the Grand Slam in a single year remains unequaled.
